OTTAWA—Key organizers of the so-called “Freedom Convoy” got leaks from sympathetic police sources from several different agencies — and the federal intelligence service — during last winter’s three-week blockade of downtown Ottawa, according to a lawyer representing some protest leaders.
“The police know this,” Wilson said, alluding to inquiry testimony that suggested front-line officers were struggling during the convoy occupation in downtown Ottawa. The Ottawa Police Service, meanwhile, declined to comment on the alleged leaks, and the RCMP and CSIS did not respond to the Star’s questions on Wednesday.
“Having observed the proceedings since the last few weeks, we had no idea of the level of dysfunction and infighting that was going on,” Wilson said. A Feb. 10 document issued by the RCMP as part of ongoing updates to the federal government made a note about the appearance of former law enforcement and military officers alongside convoy leaders at news conferences. It said they may be providing the convoy “with logistical and security advice, which may pose operational challenges for law enforcement should policing techniques and tactics be revealed to convoy participants.
