An RNC officer is among a group of eight women who have joined a lawsuit against the provincial government for sexual assaults reportedly committed by on-duty officers who drove intoxicated women home from downtown St. John’s.
Lawyer Lynn Moore of Morris Martin Moore says eight women, including one police officer, responded to a social media post she made indicating that she was aware of two women who were sexually assaulted by on-duty police officers after a night of drinking in the downtown.Moore says they’re in the process of starting an action for that woman as well.
Moore says she believes more women may be affected and she’s encouraging anyone who hasn’t done so, to come forward. In the meantime, Moore says they decided to take the civil route because in many cases the women do not know who the abuser was. In the cases where the abuser is known, the women are not interested in the criminal justice system. Moore referenced a 2014 YWCA study on sexual assault that found that out of every 1,000 sexual assaults in Canada, three resulted in convictions. “Women are not very interested in participating in a process that is re-traumatizing and does not end up with a result that validates them,” says Moore.
