Poilievre asks Elon Musk to label CBC 'government-funded' on Twitter cdnpoli
On Wednesday, NPR quit the platform after being labelled as “state-affiliated,” a label Twitter later modified to “government-funded.”
BBC News objected to being labelled as government-funded. It said the “BBC is, and always has been, independent. We are funded by the British public through the licence fee.”Elizabeth Dubois, an associate professor at the University of Ottawa’s department of communication, said if Twitter is going to use these kinds of labels, they need to be accurate. The initial label of “state-affiliated,” as in the case of NPR, was “wholly inaccurate,” Dubois said.
Alfred Hermida, a journalism professor at the University of British Columbia, agreed Poilievre is “taking advantage of the confusion that Musk has created” in order to make a political point. Since Musk, the world’s richest man, took over Twitter last year, he’s also made changes to the platform’s verification system. Previously, Twitter gave a blue checkmark to public figures including celebrities, politicians and journalists, to verify the right person was behind the account. But now, anyone can buy a blue checkmark for $8 a month.
