The Alberta group went public on Wednesday, announcing a formal bid exploration process.
In short, the Alberta group learned a lesson from the ill-conceived and poorly communicated Olympic engagement process that likely contributed to 56.4% of Calgarians giving the Games a thumbs down in the November 2018 vote.
The next vital steps include more public engagement leading to the preparation of a thorough hosting plan and detailed operational and capital budgets. Only then will the group’s funding partners — Edmonton and Calgary councils, the Alberta and Canadian governments — decide whether to forge ahead or stand down.Article content
The big-ticket item is of course the actual Games. An organizing committee in Hamilton had been working to hold the so-called Centenary Games 100 years after that city launched the inaugural British Empire Games, but the province of Ontario did not issue a funding commitment in time to meet a Commonwealth Games Canada deadline last month. That opened the door for Alberta to become the preferred candidate.
Jackson’s group will do all this groundwork for the next few months without first knowing whether an Alberta bid would be challenged by any rivals around the globe, because the Commonwealth Games Federation will not disclose whether there have been any other expressions of interest.Article content
