University of New Brunswick biologist Meghann Bruce offers most likely explanation — eelgrass
This drone shot shows a circle of vegetation in a pond near Centreville-Wareham-Trinity. - Michael FlahertyST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Is it aliens? Pollution? Or just a natural phenomenon?
Winds were a bit high, so he couldn’t fly it high enough to see his desired destination. So, he hovered it over a nearby lake instead.“It’s pretty remote, and it’s elevated. The circle is quite large. Just going by the pictures, I would say it would have been five metres or more across. If it was a man-made thing, it would have to be something quite large.”
Some of the 50 people who replied on Flaherty’s Facebook page thought it looked a lot like fungal formations where mushrooms bloom around the fringes of a circular root.“It looks like a mushroom fairy ring, caused by the radial growth of a colony from a central point, with the active part of the colony, and the fruiting, at the perimeter of the ever-growing circle. Maybe some aquatic plants grow like that, too,” he said.
in the Journal of Science, the Denmark study found the rings were caused when runoff from agricultural products caused bacterial growth, which in turn caused a buildup of toxic sulphides in the patches of eelgrass. Bruce added that sometimes, natural phenomenon can cause a buildup of bacteria and toxins. It doesn’t have to be man-made.The SaltWire Network also distributed the images to Matthew Rise, head of the ocean sciences department at Memorial University. He promised to circulate it among his colleagues.
