OTTAWA — Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh are taking a break from their combined one million TikTok followers afterTreasury Board President Mona Fortier ruled that effective Tuesday, TikTok will be wiped from all government-issued mobile devices.
The move is something of a blow for both Poilievre and Singh, two social media-savvy leaders who have used the app to whip up large online followings.on TikTok, having spent four years building a following of nearly 880,000 people and raking in millions of views. The account was a key part of the NDP’s digital campaign in the 2021 federal election, though the strategy didn’t appear to boost the party’s seat count.
“Conservatives take seriously all threats to privacy and security from foreign authoritarian regimes and will always defend the individual privacy rights of Canadians. We will fully comply with the directive to remove TikTok from government devices and will work to see that this ban is extended to include parliamentary devices,” a party spokesperson said.
One MP who still plans to do just that is the NDP’s Matthew Green, who regularly posts videos interacting with users to his nearly 8,000 followers. The European Commission last week banned the app from staff devices, and last December, U.S. President Joe Biden approved a bill that banned the majority of federal employees from having the app on government devices.
