Quebec journalist Paule Robitaille undertakes a journey through the former Soviet Union, where she lived from 1990 to 1996. As we approach next month’s…

Until recently I believed the war in Ukraine was amenable to compromise. Giving up Ukrainian claims to the Donbass and Crimea seemed like a reasonable price to pay to end Europe’s most ruinous and shattering conflict since the Second World War. But four weeks on the road in the ex-Soviet Union this past fall has disabused me of that notion. To me the prospect of negotiating with Vladimir Putin feels as futile as bargaining with Hitler.

Like the leaders of empires in the First World War, who felt they had no choice but to fight on despite crippling losses, the Russian president hangs on because he knows that stopping halfway would mean the end for him.Article content “They just throw in bodies until something collapses. Their equipment is crap, their weapons are crap, but these human waves are killing us,” said Dan Bilak, a Canadian lawyer turned Ukrainian territorial defense soldier.

In his speeches, Putin depicts what feels like an alternate universe where Russia is the victim. “What we’re doing today,” he said on national television Wednesday, “including with our special operation, is an attempt to stop this war and protect our people who live on these territories.” It feels like the world is upside down. Who unleashed this invasion of Ukraine on February 24?

It’s also a fight for the future of Russian citizens subject to the repressive power of the Kremlin. As I write this, I think about my liberal, progressive, exiled Russian friends, as well the imprisoned dissidents and others gagged inside Russia. I also think about the tens of thousands of young Russians thrown into combat as cannon fodder. We should not put all Russians in the same basket.

The longer this war drags on, the more time the Russian army and its militias will have to reorganize and rearm. The greater the collateral damage will be. And of course the nuclear threat still looms.
