That said, the weather situation can change rapidly and you might get plenty of use out of your Christmas snowshoes and boots over the holidays.Actually, there was some snow on the ground a week or so ago, the weekend of Nov. 26 to be exact. I know because I was in moose hunting for the first time this season and walked the two miles to the cabin, nearly all uphill through five or six inches of wet, slippery and soggy snow.
You may be wondering why I wasn’t moose hunting earlier in the autumn or why I didn’t ride my ATV to the cabin. I was grounded from travel to the cabin for six weeks. I had to get a hernia fixed and, of course, it needed healing time and I needed rest. I did some light stuff as time went on, but driving a quad over that rocky trail is an extreme strain on all core muscles. I did not need that.
So, this week I’m talking about knives for Christmas. They can be for hunting, fishing, survival, bushcraft, camping, hiking or whatever. I like crossover knives that can be used for all of the above. In my opinion, Helle of Norway makes fantastic knives. I’ve wanted one for a while and they aren’t cheap. I have plenty of knives already and I was having a bit of a debate with myself over this one. But I had to try one. I am not sorry and it is worth every penny.
I chose mine in triple-laminated, high-carbon steel, which has a unique sharpness all its own. I love it. Imagine how many deer — not reindeer, of course — moose, caribou, rabbits and all sorts of game critters have been cleaned up with these knives. It’s a plenty good woods utility knife as well, but don’t go prying too hard with it because it is a folder, albeit a solid one.Buck does make bigger knives, if that's your cup of tea. - Contributed
