Ravi Parmar will be the NDP candidate for the Langford-Juan de Fuca riding vacated by John Horgan. Meanwhile, Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke MP Randall Garrison says he won’t run again
Sooke School District board chair Ravi Parmar is expected to be acclaimed as the BC NDP candidate for the provincial Langford-Juan de Fuca riding next month.
No date has been set for a byelection to replace John Horgan in the riding, after he retired as premier in November and as MLA at the end of March.Meanwhile, Randall Garrison, NDP MP for Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke, announced Thursday he will not seek re-election in the next federal election after more than a decade in federal politics.
Garrison led initiatives to add transgender rights to the Canadian Human Rights Code and the hate crimes section of the Criminal Code. Garrison said in a statement that as an “out and proud member of the 2SLGBTQI+ community,” he hopes he demonstrated that diversity is one of Canada’s strengths as a nation and that more diverse parliaments make better laws.
“It has been, and continues to be, an honour to work with the diverse communities that make up the riding of Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke including the six municipalities, three First Nations, and the large contingent of military families,” said Garrison.
