Trudy Spooner, left, works with daughter Simone Webb and Charlene VanLeeuwen to choose a Christmas tree for their family in Hunter River Dec. 4. Together they decided to leave this particular tree for next year. - Alison JenkinsThe VanLeeuwen family has been growing Christmas trees for more than 20 years. It started as a “make work project" for their couple’s children, said Charlene VanLeeuwen when SaltWire Network visited their farm on Dec. 4.
There’s around an acre of trees to choose from — Colorado spruce, balsam fir and Norway spruce — in a variety of sizes, said John. The veterinary group will be working alongside several other Farmers Helping Farmers volunteers who will be working on different projects, said John. So far, around a dozen people have picked up trees but there are lots more available. Donations can be left with the VanLeeuwens, or online through the Farmer’s Helping Farmers website. Charlene said it usually adds up to around $2,000 each year.
