Andrea Morrison and Nancy Ripley represented Canada at event

P.E.I. triathletes Nancy Ripley, left, and Andrea Morrison represented Canada and the province at the World Triathlon Championships in Abu Dhabi from Nov. 23-26. - ContributedTo mark her 10th year in remission from thyroid cancer, P.E.I. triathlete Andrea Morrison decided to put herself through a new challenge — competing in the World Triathlon Championships in Abu Dhabi.

"It was quite a bit hot when you were out in the open," said Ripley, an experienced athlete who has raced in several triathlons, marathons and ironman competitions."You soon learned to run under the palm trees whenever you could or under the buildings to get into some shade." "When the worlds were awarded to it was just something that I had to do," said Morrison, who now teaches at Mount Academy in Charlottetown."It was going back to somewhere that was a big part of my life...I even got to connect with some old friends."

"Rebuilding my fitness and my stamina after that, it was part of my, OK, I'm a survivor, well lets prove you are still capable of doing these things," said Morrison."It was a quiet, personal journey for me to regain who I was and just to push my body and kind of prove, haha, I won.""For those who are still going through a cancer diagnosis and wondering, what is my future — is a future — it takes a while to get there, but you can do it," said Morrison.

Her first was in Lake Placid, N.Y., in 2018. Then, in 2019, she ran the Boston Marathon and a few months later won her age group in the Subaru Ironman in Mount Tremblant, Que. That served as a qualifier for the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, which she competed in seven weeks later.
