“It’s not drugs that cause the deaths of these people: It’s stigma,” Kucyk said. “People hide in order to consume; they’re alone and so there is no one to intervene.” Some addiction services have nevertheless improved in recent years, such as supervised injection services. In Montreal, there are three fixed sites and one mobile unit to permit intravenous drug users to use safely.
In Quebec, more than one person a day dies of a drug overdose. “And here again, we are talking about recorded deaths,” said Kucyk, himself an intravenous drug user. “In 2021, more Quebecers died of overdoses than in motor vehicle accidents. Yet this problem remains relatively poorly addressed by media.”
“What exacerbated the pandemic is that imports of foreign substances have stopped. People turned to local stock made with questionable mixtures, and it was really more complicated to know what you were consuming,” explained Gagné-Giguère; substance testing is not yet a well-established practice, he added.
