TORONTO — This isn’t the start the new\u002Dlook Ottawa Senators expected by any stretch of the imagination.

Two games into a season that’s all about hope that the club will battle for a playoff spot in the spring, the Senators headed home from their first road trip winless after 3-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday night at Scotiabank Arena.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

Nor should they be. This group has far too much talent for this to continue. Everybody in the room, including Josh Norris, Tim Stutzle, Thomas Chabot, Drake Batherson, Alex DeBrincat, Claude Giroux and Tkachuk, can be better. In that situation, the Senators need to be more physical because nobody can afford to give up goals like the one Holl scored. It put a damper on what had been an otherwise strong effort by the Senators against a team that’s supposed to compete for a Stanley Cup.

“Samsonov made so many saves that could have gone in for us,” Smith said. “It’s tough to leave here without a point but the message has to be that you can’t play any better without getting one. We’re going to win games here shortly that maybe we don’t deserve but if we play like that we’ll be fine.”Article content
