The man, who has never been identified by public health officials, became the city’s first COVID-19 death.Article content They are some of an estimated 7.5 million people worldwide who have died of COVID-19 since late 2019. The World Health Organization says the real number is likely two or three times as high but difficult to verify because all deaths have not been recorded.death represents a way marker on the exhausting journey that is the COVID-19 pandemic. But it does not mark the end. More Ottawa residents will die of COVID-19 before it is over.
COVID-19 deaths dropped significantly in 2021 as large numbers of people became vaccinated and masking plus other mandates were in place. Ottawa had, and still has, one of the highest vaccination rates in the province, but numbers have dropped steadily with each subsequent booster. Still, by the end of 2021, an additional 229 Ottawa residents were dead as a result of COVID-19.
Against that backdrop, much of the world has moved on from the pandemic. In Ottawa and across the province and the country, COVID mandates have been lifted and people are understandably weary of the pandemic.“It was inevitable that we would reach 1,000 deaths at some point. I would have hoped that it would have taken a decade or more, rather than under three years,” says Dr. Raywat Deonandan, an epidemiologist, author, journalist and global health specialist.
“There are some public health failures that have allowed infection to occur at a rate faster than it could have been.”
