Stephane Okenge\u0027s dream of playing U.S. college basketball was shattered after a car accident in Nebraska left him a quadriplegic.
Stephane Okenge was seriously injured in an early morning crash just outside Lincoln, Neb., on Oct. 23.Stephane Okenge was part of the elite CTA program for two years while enrolled as a full-time student at Notre Dame. He was a member of CTA’s national prep league championship team in 2018.
Ben Okenge said his brother remembers little of the 7:30 a.m. crash, which occurred as he was returning to York from Lincoln with a friend following a party the previous evening. Stephane required a ventilator to breathe during his first weeks in ICU. “At first, it did not look promising at all,” said Okenge. “It looked like he was going to be on the ventilator for good, but they’ve been able to wean him off of it.”
