Opinion: It’s time to rip out the concrete and the stage that no one performs on and replace the entire thing with a green oasis. Here’s a vision for a Yonge-Dundas Square that we all could actually love.

There’s a lot of crises in Toronto right now. Housing, transit, mental health, violence — our next “supermayor,” whoever it ends up being, has a lot of pressing items on the agenda already.

Instead, we have now a cheap knock off that neither draws any tourists nor serve the locals who fund its upkeep. The harsh concrete landscaping, the overbearing and wasteful digital billboards, the negligent treatment of the city’s most vulnerable residents — is there anything to praise? Bring together visionary architects and landscape designers and build a multi-level open sided enclave covered in trees, flowers, shrubs, life. Think something that’s a cross between a Zen garden and a parking garage built out of wood. Design the whole thing with large ramps so it’s accessible by design and requires no mechanical elements like elevators and escalators.Take the giant digital billboards and repurpose them as a new art gallery.

Let’s stop pretending that we can’t see the people struggling with mental health and drug addiction right on the street corner. Instead, how about a space that welcomes all, that is truly a “public” square and where no one is undesirable?
