Gregor Chisholm: Why I refused to vote on MLB awards: Money got in the way

Let’s say he finished just outside the top five in voting and missed out on a big payday. Why would Manoah want to give me a few minutes of his time if I played a role in denying him that cheque?

To be clear, I’ve never had anyone from the Jays try to pressure me into voting a certain way, and even if they did it wouldn’t work. Can the same be said about every other member of the BBWAA, especially at a time when homerism is at an all-time high and several owners are also in possession of media outlets? I’m not convinced.

To that I say, fair point. But individual incentives, sometimes based on writers’ votes, were often out of sight, out of mind. That’s not an excuse; it’s just the truth. For years I covered a front office that refused to offer incentive-laden deals; for players elsewhere, the figures weren’t high enough to attract my attention.
