Mike Wilner: Why Danny Jansen isn’t the catcher the Blue Jays should trade

Brantley was the big prize coming back to Cleveland when Mark Shapiro traded CC Sabathia to Milwaukee in 2008. His father, Mickey, was the Jays’ hitting coach from 2005-07.

Only one Blue Jay, Kirk, had an OBP higher than .343 last season. Brantley hasn’t posted an OBP lower than .357 in a decade. He’s also a career .298 hitter. If it’s Moreno who moves, other possibilities open up. Trading him doesn’t create a spot in the lineup, since he’s set to be the third catcher, but it could give the Jays a chance to bolster the depth of their starting rotation with a major-league-ready prospect arm equal in value to Moreno. Or they could add a young outfielder such as Arizona’s Alek Thomas, addressing a position of long-term weakness since Kiermaier and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. will both be free agents after ‘23.

A Tyler Heineman-type third catcher and a Raimel Tapiesque fourth outfielder could then be scooped up in free agency. They could still keep all three catchers and utilize Moreno’s athleticism by making him a Swiss army knife-type, with a few starts at second base, third base and the corner outfield spots as well as working behind the plate once or twice a week, but that really undercuts his overall value. He’s worth far more to another team as their catcher of the future than he is as the Jays’ Ben Zobrist of the present.
