Opinion: When out-of-town visitors ask about the best way to get around Toronto, my advice has generally been consistent: take the TTC. It’ll get you where you need to go. This year, that turned out to be terribly bad advice.

Big number: 86 per cent, the percentage of TTC riders using bus and streetcar routes not meeting the TTC’s definition of “on time” in October, according to a recent TTC board meeting.

This year, that turned out to be terribly bad advice. Family and friends who came to visit us over the holidays found my wisdom to be seriously lacking. A combination of long delays and ultraslow service meant they might have been smarter to rely on taxis, or Uber, or Bike Share or, hell, even renting a car to get around.

revealed that, in October, just 31 of 160 tracked bus and streetcar routes met the TTC’s definition of “on time.” Those “on time” routes were used by just 14 per cent of TTC riders. The TTC blames construction for a lot of its woes, with 41 bus or streetcar routes in October — serving 35 per cent of customers — seeing serious construction-related delays. But I find it hard to accept this as an excuse. The city owns and funds the TTC. The city also issues permits and sets standards for construction sites.
