We may be proud of our diverse city, but there is no question that Toronto’s diversity is not reflected among its decision-makers. Opinion by Neethan Shan
, while more than half the city’s population belonged to a visible minority.
The reduction of city council to 25 seats four years ago didn’t help the problem. Not only was direct participation diminished, but indirect representation also suffered. With each ward becoming extremely large, local democracy took a hit — and it impacted marginalized, low-income and racialized communities the most.
With less democracy, we see fewer opportunities for our communities to raise our voices and be heard; to shape the agenda at city hall; and to demand action, transparency and accountability from elected representatives.
