Mike Wilner: The roof fell in on Alek Manoah (again) in Jays’ loss to Rays. But don’t count him out
right-hander Alek Manoah — who finished third in Cy Young Award voting in his first full year in the bigs — was trying to bounce back from a rough home opener and complete a sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays, who came to town 13-0.
Pitching coach Pete Walker came out for a chat and told the 25-year-old Manoah to go after hitters with his electric stuff. He responded with a pair of strikeouts, then got ahead of Josh Lowe 1-and-2. He missed with a slider, then threw another one that Lowe got just enough of, for a two-run bloop single to shallow centre field.
A two-out walk was followed by a stolen base , a loud double into the gap in right-centre, a soft single up the third-base line, and a back-breaking three-run homer by nine-hole hitter Christian Bethancourt. Truth is, this run of poor performances by Manoah is so stunning because we’ve never seen anything like it from him before. He debuted less than two years ago with six innings of two-hit shutout at Yankee Stadium, and it had been smooth sailing ever since until this month.Jays’ 8-1 loss to the Rays
Manoah is certainly going through it right now, and while he stated very plainly after the game that “they kicked my butt,” he did not seem to be doubting himself or his ability in any way. Manoah can expect to make about 28 more starts, plus playoffs. While he has struggled, the team has had his back, winning in all of this season’s appearances until Sunday.
