Dave Feschuk: No sweater is safe from ads in sports, perhaps not even “The Hockey Sweater”
season and, for all the hand-wringing in Leafsland, it’s worth noting that hockey doomsday has not yet arrived.
Surely Carrier, or anyone who appreciates the significance of La Sainte-Flanelle — or the “holy flannel,” as the Montreal sweater is sometimes known in Quebec — would be outraged by the shameless selling of such sacred real estate.
That’s a fair point. There was a time when NHL rinks, never mind jerseys and helmets — the latter of which got the ad treatment in 2020-21 — were far less crowded with commercial logos. And while there is always pushback to cash grabs, life tends to go on.
And, yes, the NBA gave over a part of its jerseys to advertising patches in 2017. Next year even bigger patches are coming to the sleeves of Major League Baseball uniforms. The Blue Jays have yet to announce any developments on that front.
