The problem with the NHL’s approach to LGBTQ inclusion is that when players opt out of Pride events, the cultural debate and backlash that ensues overtakes everything. Opinion by EmmaRoseTeitel
As a long-suffering Toronto sports fan it’s my belief that the Toronto Maple Leafs should be required to advance past the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs before they are permitted to participate in any event with the word “Pride” in the title.
It’s easy to mock corporate gestures of inclusion, but there is something undeniably powerful about witnessing a bunch of macho hockey players who exist in a historically homophobic environment jump onto the ice with their sticks awash in rainbow — a spectacle that would have seemed impossible not long ago.
I don’t, however, find it difficult to judge the likes of players Eric and Marc Staal or James Reimer, who recently cited religious beliefs as a reason for rejecting Pride Night. For example, it’s well and good that players don their rainbow apparel in the arena, but what happens beyond the rink — in the media and on social media — is ugly and regressive.
