tried to prove they were the real deal last year, but apparently they didn’t make a loud enough case. Too many critics didn’t take them seriously, and too few fans were paying attention with plenty of big-market clubs to worry about instead.
The early season success is not a mirage. They’ve been doing this for a while. Since June 1, 2022 they have gone 91-65, a 94-win pace and two more than the Jays finished with last season. Their .583 win percentage over that stretch ranks fourth in the majors, trailing only the Braves, Dodgers and Astros.
“You could see it coming,” Jays manager John Schneider said of the Orioles’ success. “You never know, guys in their second year, how the league will respond to them and what they’ll do … but they’re going to be good for a while. Rutschman is a big-time difference maker on both sides of the ball for them, that’s pretty well documented.”
It’s a much different approach than the one the Jays took during a similar time in their development. They added Hyun-Jin Ryu in 2020, and made a pair of splashy signings the following season in George Springer and Marcus Semien. That helped speed up their timeline and brought them to within one win of a play-in game.
“They’re having a good start to the season, a lot of the same guys as last year,” Schneider said. “You throw in Frazier, who we know. Their bullpen is really good, and I think the key to this is getting to their starters, having good at-bats early in the game, driving up some pitch counts and trying to avoid some of those late-inning guys.”
