Opinion Martin Regg Cohn: John Tory goes up in flames as Doug Ford hides in a smokescreen
All thanks to John Tory, who lost his job.
Everyone has now heard of Tory’s extramarital affair. But the dirty details of Ford getting into bed with rich developers may never fully sink in. Ford also wants us to close our eyes to his fiduciary duty as premier. He wants us to believe he is fiercely independent of friendly land developers whose fingerprints are all over the Greenbelt — a treasure trove that his— and that he’d never improperly cut the cake, so to speak.
When the media made inquiries about this peculiar stag-and-doe party, the premier’s office moved into damage control mode with a pre-emptive strike: They took the details — their details and their version of events — to the legislature’s independent integrity commissioner for an opinion., J. David Wake, there was no violation of ethics rules that bind MPPs — which has the effect of putting a damper on the story.
Faced with these allegations, Ford’s public testimony was pure sanctimony: “I know the difference between what we should and shouldn’t do,” the premier huffed with customary hubris. As an heir to his family’s fortune, Ford assuredly sees himself as being above the mundane and miserly vulnerabilities of mere mortals when consorting with the richest of the rich.
