In a nuclear faceoff with Russia, countries like Canada will need to be nimble. There are clearly limits to what a middle power like Canada can achieve to rein in Russia’s president. Opinion by reggcohn

Now, the culmination of Russia’s “special military operation” is nuclear escalation. There are clearly limits to what a middle power like Canada can achieve. Just as there are limits to what a nuclear power like Russia can attain on the ground.

That’s why the West has no alternative but to stand its ground. But when both sides end up playing a game of chicken, how will it play out? That’s essentially Putin’s play today. Instead of the supposedly stable paradigm of MAD — mutual assured destruction — the Russian leader is recasting himself as a madman who must be accommodated.Today’s nuclear gamesmanship is not what it was in World War II or even the Cold War.

The result is that nukes are not the trump card they once were. And they come at great cost — not only in massive military retaliation but political isolation. But the ground has shifted in recent months. Just as China has choices to make about Russia and the West, so does Canada.
