Steward: Danielle Smith’s clumsy free Alberta campaign facing resistance in cities via torontostar

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s quest for a quasi-separate Alberta goes over well in rural parts of the province. But that’s not the whole story: Calgary and Edmonton have become formidable fortresses of opposition to her plans.

While polls now show the UCP gaining support since Jason Kenney stepped down as leader, leaving it neck and neck with the NDP, there are plenty of reasons for Smith to worry. To make matters worse for Smith and the UCP, high profile Calgarians have been speaking out against the Sovereignty Act. Deborah Yedlin, President and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce and the University of Calgary’s former Chancellor, was particularly hard hitting. In repeated interviews she warned that the Sovereignty Act would scare off potential investors and discourage professionals and skilled workers from moving here.

Smith also faces an uphill battle in Alberta when it comes to her personal popularity. She lags far behind Rachel Notley on that score.by Janet Brown Opinion Research for the CBC found that 62 per cent of respondents were impressed with Rachel Notley compared to 40 per cent for Smith. A more recent Leger poll found the same gap.
