A documentary on an imprisoned Russian politician may not sound like the jolliest entertainment, but Daniel Roher, the young Torontonian who directed it, has managed to turn the story of Alexei Navalny into a real-life thriller.
It’s at once farcical and sinister — agents of the FSB actually did poison Navalny this way in August 2020. After he recovered, he staged the telephone sting and then posted it all on YouTube, garnering millions of views. It’s the most celebrated example of Navalny’s legendary skill with social media, which made him the best-known opposition figure in Russia and probably the only Russian politician, aside from Vladimir Putin, widely known outside the country.
For one thing, even from solitary confinement Navalny has managed to speak out forcefully against the invasion, calling it an “unjust war of aggression.” Somehow he’s gotten messages out to supporters who keep his Twitter feed and other social media active. He even issuedWith other anti-war voices suppressed by Putin’s regime, Navalny has become, in the words of Daniel Roher, “the loudest antiwar advocate in the country.
Navalny is a very appealing figure who has managed to keep his sense of humour and playfulness intact no matter what Putin throws at him. But he’s far from perfect, even though western liberals looking for a champion in Russia too often project their values onto him.
