Gregor Chisholm: Can the Blue Jays trade for Shohei Ohtani and what would an offer look like?
Ohtani is set to earn $30 million in the final year of his deal. The Jays currently have a projected payroll of $190 million for next season, per FanGraph’s Roster Resource, before any off-season moves are made. While the final budget remains unknown, a trade for Ohtani almost certainly would require cutting costs elsewhere.
Ohtani is unique and there are no precedents to use as a gauge for his next deal. He’ll command a wide variety of offers, shorter-term deals with a high annual salary and long-term commitments that locks him up for the rest of his career. Beyond a potential injury, there’s no reason to rush into that process, which means any team that acquires him knows he might walk away at the end of the year.Per MLB Pipeline, the top prospect in the Angels system is 22-year-old catcher Logan O’Hoppe.
