Gregor Chisholm: Blue Jays’ trade for Daulton Varsho is a gamble, but standing pat wasn’t an option
had been searching all off-season for a powerful left-handed bat to insert into their lineup. General manager Ross Atkins got his man Friday, and paid a pretty penny to do it.
Varsho possesses a ton of power, with 27 home runs in 151 games in his first full season. He also drew a decent number of walks while striking out at an above-average rate and producing a slash line of .235/.302/.443. The Wisconsin native was the Diamondbacks’ leadoff man for 62 games last season but should settle in as a middle-of-the-order bat for the Jays.
The inclusion of Gurriel, instead of a couple lower-level prospects to round out the deal, is more curious even though the impact won't be felt beyond 2023. Gurriel, who is eligible for free agency at the end of next season, would have lost a clear path to playing time had he not been traded, but he would have been an excellent fit as a fourth outfielder, part-time DH and insurance policy for Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
If the Jays fail to capitalize on the next several seasons, then every hit and every baserunner Moreno nabs will be glorified much in the same way Noah Syndergaard and Travis d'Arnuad were once idolized after Alex Anthopoulos traded them to the New York Mets for R.A. Dickey in 2012. Deep down, the Jays never wanted to trade him but Kirk's emergence as an all-star-calibre hitter and elite pitch framer, combined with Jansen's experience, meant it was something they had to consider. A few years down the road, we'll find out whether this was a bargain, the cost of doing business, or a drastic overpay.
