Edward Keenan: Argos are just like us, which makes their Grey Cup victory that much sweeter
Is there anyone who’s going to enjoy the Argos’ Grey Cup rally celebration in Maple Leafs Square,He’s a hometown boy, born in Congo but raised in Mississauga, who played university football in Canada. He was playing for his hometown Argos, who went into the game heavy underdogs. He’s been a pro 11 years — a linebacker, so 11years — and despite going to the championship game in his rookie year, he has never won the big trophy before.
As this city used to say, everywhere you went, in every situation, while I was a child: Arrrrrrrrrrrgooooooooooos!I know it’s likely many of us are preoccupied with the Canadian World Cup team — playing that other kind of football — playing in its first big tournament since 1986. In a typical year, many times more Canadians watch the American football Super Bowl than tune into the Grey Cup.
This feels worth celebrating especially, it struck me watching Muamba and his teammates jump around in tears on Sunday night, because in the world of professional sports celebrity megamillionaires, these are working class heroes. Relatively speaking, at least. Which is what seems remarkable. At this point, it’s a rarity to think of professional athletes as lunch bucket workers who may be living paycheque-to-paycheque like the rest of us . We think of the athletes we watch competing for championships as superheroes, living superstar lifestyles.
