Mike Wilner: After an ugly start, Canada had Britain at its mercy in World Baseball Classic opener

But when all was said and done Sunday afternoon in Phoenix, Team Canada had a big win in its opening game of thebeating Britain 18-8 in a game shortened to 6 1/2 innings by the tournament’s mercy rule.

The 28-year-old, son of Canadian coach and former Jay Paul Quantrill, only retired two of the eight batters he faced and didn’t make it out of the first inning. He issued four walks, in stark contrast to the grand total of five first-inning walks he allowed over 32 starts with the Cleveland Guardians last season.

So this is where we are, and the three or four innings Canada was expecting from Quantrill turned into just two outs and a 3-0 deficit before they’d even sent a man to the plate. But then they got to hit, and it was no contest.
