Western Forest Products says it enacted the temporary stoppage at the Alberni Pacific Division Sawmill in mid-October.

Posted: Oct. 31, 2022 4:28PMA Port Alberni sawmill has had its operations temporarily curtailed, again.

Western Forest Products says it enacted the temporary stoppage at the Alberni Pacific Division Sawmill in mid-October, displacing approximately 90 employees until operations resume. The company, which saw lumber production fall 16 per cent year-over-year in the second quarter of 2022, says the curtailment is due to a challenging market, such as log supply issues.

“We will continue to monitor markets and log availability to determine when we can resume operations,” the company said in a statement.Sign up for our newsletter to get breaking news and daily digests sent to your email.CHEK News reached out to the union representing workers at the mill, United Steelworkers Local 1-1937, for comment but has not heard back.

The sawmill has seen operations curtailed several times in the last few years due to log supply challenges brought on by inclement weather and forest fires.
