“If there was ever an inmate that needed a second chance to do their life over and to do it right this time, it’s Ricci Abram,” his defence lawyer Mitchell Huberman told the jury in his closing arguments.Article content Riley died of a traumatic head injury and there was evidence at his autopsy of older injuries that hadn’t been treated.
Abram, he said, was drinking when he was six and tried marijuana at age eight. He effectively was abandoned by his mother and victimized both physically and sexually. Abram is living in a low-security facility for Indigenous offenders in Quebec. “You have someone before you today who is not the man he was 20 years ago. He is reformed. He has taken extensive programming in overcoming his previous deficits that he had,” Huberman said.
Joseph Perfetto, regional director of Crown operations, acknowledged Abram’s “excellent progress” but said some impacts of some cases, like this one, outweigh the improvements made by the offender.Article content
