A handful of Liberals in early jockeying to lead the party out of the doldrums after two disastrous provincial elections are pushing for a vote by the end of the year.

Sources said the party’s executive council will weigh the drive for an early vote against the desire for a bigger field of candidates — possibly includingand former federal cabinet minister Navdeep Bains — who need longer time lines. A barrier to potential candidates such as Crombie and Bains, who both made appearances at convention hospitality suites on the weekend, was dropped when Liberal MPP Stephen Blais withdrew a proposed amendment to the party constitution requiring leadership candidates to have been members since Jan. 1 of this year.
“There’s no sugar-coating,” he added. “That’s the hard, hard work that needs to happen … we don’t have a lot of time to do the hard work.”
