Sudbury man is one of just 16 seniors across Ontario presented with an Ontario Senior Achievement Award
A Sudbury man has been honoured for his outstanding level of volunteerism in the community for the past 40 years. Reijo Viitala was honoured Tuesday by the Government of Ontario and the Finlandia SISU Foundation at Finlandia Village.
Viitala was nominated by Jeanna de la Morandiere, the volunteer services co-ordinator at Finlandia. She said she was pleased to see Viitala recognized for his contributions to the Finnish community and also to the wider Sudbury community. "Mr. Viitala has for the past four decades been volunteering and putting service above self for so many organizations, as you've heard," said Munch.
The award presentation was done by Sudbury MPP Jamie West, who mentioned that Viitala had first been invited to go to Toronto for the awards presentation but chose to stay in Sudbury to be with friends, family and other local volunteers. "And so when I read it, I want you to know that all of the accomplishments that Reijo had over the years, there wasn't room and we didn't want to make several pages. So there'll be a summary," West explained.
