Minister of Health Sylvia Jones commended The Ottawa Hospital for its agreement with a private group to rent out idle operating rooms
Many questions about the agreement between the hospital and the Academic Orthopedic Surgical Associates of Ottawa remain unanswered.
Thursday was the first time the minister of health has weighed in on the issue that has drawn criticism and questions over the past week. Among key concerns is whether the weekend clinic is poaching nurses and other staff from the already staffing-level-challenged Ottawa Hospital. Some, including Harden, are asking why the province isn’t funding hospitals to keep their operating rooms open themselves rather than allowing private companies to profit from using them.
Spokesperson Rebecca Abelson called the partnership with the Academic Orthopedic Surgical Associates of Ottawa to perform hip and knee surgeries on Saturdays a “cost-recovery model” that allows the hospital to use its existing funding fully. “We are funded for a certain number of surgeries and working with AOAO helps us meet this gap in our orthopedic capacity.”
But critics, including the Ontario Nurses’ Association, say the Academic Orthopedic Surgical Associates of Ottawa is already poaching from the hospital for staff to work in the clinic.
