'Old and new school': Calgary Wranglers head coach Mitch Love earns rave reviews, but is he ready for the NHL? Flames
Love a former minor-league fighter who wouldn’t give an inch
During his stint in the AHL, Love totalled six goals, 27 points and more than 100 fights. While he doesn’t cast a frightening shadow, the wiry 6-footer didn’t decline many invites to dance. He also didn’t miss the hint when, toward the end of his career, he was converted to forward — “That tells me that I wasn’t good enough to be a defenceman, so they tried to hide me up front on the fourth line.”
“He’s demanding, but it’s always what you need. He keeps us honest every day,” echoed Wranglers alternate captain Nick DeSimone. “It’s not demanding where he’s screaming at us. It’s demanding on the little things, how important those things are in practice, stopping at the net, having a good stick, hitting the net. Just those little things, over time, it compounds. I feel like over the course of the season, it really ingrains in you. And then he’s blunt. He’s honest.
“I think that gives him the background and bedrock to be a great pro coach because I think the pro game is getting more and more like the junior game, in terms of how you have to treat people,” Priestner said. “You can’t have that approach of, ‘It’s my way or the highway’ and ‘Listen to me or you’re screwed.’ I don’t think that way is working anymore in the NHL, and that’s where I think Mitch’s experience really comes in handy.
