Students not being of age to vote shouldn’t exclude them from decisions affecting their academic future.
Students, parents, grandparents, school staff, guardians: all these people need to be involved in the decision-making process.
Right now, if a student goes up to a teacher and discloses that they’re having depressive thoughts, that teacher has no idea what to do. Maybe the student gets referred to a guidance counsellor . That guidance councillor tells them to up their grades, as that will “help.” It won’t. We need an education system that focuses on students’ individual needs.
In Zone 6 in particular, we’ve seen schools close down but new neighbourhoods built. We have schools such as Manor Park Public School that have parking lots filled with portable classrooms, and instead of talks of building more schools and solving the root problem, we have talks of paving over play-yards with parking lots for more portables. We need a trustee who is willing to stand up for the community, because new schools are being built in Ottawa — just not for us.
