A decision on whether Oak Bay’s bonfire will go ahead this year will come next week, Mayor Kevin Murdoch says.
While some Greater Victoria communities are banning fireworks and cancelling their Halloween bonfires, the giant bonfire in Fireman’s Park in Oak Bay has not been extinguished — yet.
“Over the next week, winds are forecast to be 20 to 40 km/h, so even if you start getting some precipitation, the evaporation rates are extremely high,” said the fire chief. “And because of the long period of drought, soil conditions are extremely dry, sort of like concrete. Even if you get a high volume of rain, it runs across the surface like on concrete and drains away and doesn’t get absorbed.
Oak Bay Mayor Kevin Murdoch said the district will wait until early next week to take another look at the forecast and decide whether to hold the bonfire. But there will be other events — hotdogs for the kids and the costume contest — and some entertainment if the bonfire doesn’t take place,” he said.
