A union frustrated by what it calls lack of action on ER nursing shortages has sent an open letter to Nova Scotia government officials on behalf of Halifax ...
The NSGEU, the Nova Scotia Nurses Union and other unions have long complained about the failure to recruit and retain ER nurses.“With patient to nurse ratios worsening, the burnout experienced by RNs has ballooned. This is affecting our ability to retain and recruit RNs. It is driving our existing RN staff to move to casual positions, sign lucrative travel nurse contracts or leave the profession altogether.
“They’re working side by side and it’s very demoralizing,” he said in an interview Tuesday. “It’s just a revolving door, they can’t keep nurses. They can’t keep the right mix of nurses, they need senior nurses working with younger nurses, mentoring and that’s just not happening. …You have nurses that have worked 25 years and they can’t get vacation time. They have to work 12-, 16-hour days, five, six days a week. They’re burning out.
Matching private agency pay isn’t practical but “maybe look at weekend premiums, night premiums, maybe look at a premium where nurses are working so short. We need incentives, immediate incentives to keep our nurses working and to bring back nurses who have left.”“Really, they’re poaching from our own members, they’re poaching from our public system.”
Green Staff and other private nursing agencies did not respond Tuesday to requests for interviews on concerns about their increasing presence in the public health-care system.
