In West Vancouver, the incumbent mayor, Mary-Ann Booth, faces three challengers. Mark Sager is a former mayor who was 21 votes shy of Booth in 2018. Marcus Wong is a city councillor hoping to step up and Teresa De Cotiis is a realtor. Seventeen candidates in the district are vying for council’s six seats.Article content
Incumbents in both the city and district of North Vancouver each face one challenger: City mayor Linda Buchanan faces Guy Heywood, who lost to Buchanan in 2018 by 401 votes, while 12 are seeking a seat on council. And in the District of North Vancouver, incumbent Mike Little squares off against two-term councillor Mathew Bond, with 13 vying for council.
Issues that dominate all over Metro Vancouver such as traffic congestion and home affordability are hotly debated on the North Shore, cut off as it is from the rest of the Lower Mainland by Burrard Inlet with only four or five traffic lanes — depending on which way the middle lane on the Lions Gate Bridge is switched — and the SeaBus to cross the water.
And the pace of development has pitted politicians who favour density against those who want to retain the North Shore’s historical attachment to single-family homes.Article content
