Brett Smyth resigned his council seat in late March, following a clash with Mayor Peter Jones that culminated in Smyth referring to the mayor as “Mr. Hitler.”

The District of North Saanich is heading to a byelection on July 8 to fill a vacant council seat following the resignation of Brett Smyth as councillor.Council voted Monday night to set the July date over an option in October. The district is bound by legislation to hold a byelection “as soon as practicable” after a seat is vacated, the staff report said.

Some councillors and residents wants to see more affordable housing options in the district, while others are pushing to maintain the status quo in the rural municipality. Jones said he doesn’t think receiving a draft from Modus advances the district further than receiving the data collected.
