The Ontario Fire Marshal says there were no working smoke alarms in an east Mountain townhouse that caught fire Thursday, claiming the lives of four people, including two young kids.

The Ontario Fire Marshal says there were no working smoke alarms in an east Mountain townhouse thatFire marshal Jon Pegg said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon that the fire originated in an upholstered couch on the main floor of Unit 4 at 14 Derby St., a townhouse complex off Rymal Road East near Upper Gage that has as many as 50 townhomes.

In place of a holiday decoration seen days earlier, a memorial — flowers and a two small teddy bears — adorned a tree on the front lawn Tuesday afternoon. “This is a very in-depth and comprehensive process, which involves lab analysis and modelling,” he said, adding that more details will be released once completed.
