Our cover for Tuesday, April 18. simmonssteve: Playoffs should be Keefe's coming-out party sunhornby: Leafs aim to defeat their past koshtorontosun: McCabe: 'Sheer excitement, sheer joy'
He didn’t win a Conn Smythe Trophy by accident when the St. Louis Blues won the Stanley Cup. He earned every moment of it. He may not be exactly the player he was three years ago. The Leafs don’t need him to be that. Keefe needs him to fit whatever hole he is looking to fill at any time throughout the series.Keefe has options all over his roster that he hasn’t previously had.
It looks as though Keefe has decided upon TJ Brodie and Jake McCabe as his No. 1 pair on defence. That’s not exactly Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook. Morgan Rielly, who struggled through a lot of the season, is paired with Luke Schenn, who is smarter than he is fast. The third pair will begin with Mark Giordano and Justin Holl, who got better as the year went on. And Keefe has options just in case — Timothy Liljegren. Erik Gustafsson.
Against Montreal, Keefe didn’t have Tavares or a healthy Nick Foligno. Against Tampa last year, he didn’t have a healthy Bunting or the options of O’Reilly, Noel Acciari and Sam Lafferty, or even a wild card such as Knies. He didn’t have McCabe or Schenn or Holl, Liljegren or Gustafsson playing at the level they’re capable of now.
