Mac Jones, the New England Patriots’ starting quarterback who hasn’t played since Sept. 25, will return for Monday Night Football.

Jones suffered a high ankle sprain late in a Week 3 loss to Baltimore. Top backup Brian Hoyer replaced him for less than a quarter before being concussed at Green Bay. Rookie Bailey Zappe completed that game for the Patriots, admirably, and has been even more impressive in his two starts since then — both resounding New England victories, over Detroit and Cleveland.

But is it really much of an advantage for New England should the rusty Jones indeed start over the hot rookie? Belichick, one of the top defensive masterminds in NFL history, is renowned for outright embarrassing first- or second-year passers. Fields is struggling as much as any QB a Belichick defence has ever faced. The Bears’ passing attack is so woeful with Fields at the helm that:Chicago is the only team averaging more yards on the ground than through the air, and the Bears’ discrepancy is not even close .Fields also has taken a league-leading 23 sacks.
