N.L. skater Maddox Glover is taking home gold in the men's Special Olympic figure skating category from the 2023 Canada Winter Games. - Skate Canada Newfoundland and LabradorCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Conception Bay South’s Maddox Glover is bringing home gold after winning the men’s Special Olympic figure skating event at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in P.E.I.
The 13-year-old Grade 8 student from Villanova Junior High went to the Games intending to skate his personal best.Glover skates with the Prince of Wales Skating Club and is coached by Jenna Hillyard. He has been skating since he was four years old and is the current provincial champion for men’s Special Olympics Level II in the province.Manager Susan Dean said it was an emotional day.
“We were watching his practices, he has been doing phenomenal all week, and when he went down to the ice, you could see the confidence in his face. He was ready,” said Dean. “Maddox absolutely loves skating. It’s his go-to thing. He embraces every moment that he’s on the ice. It is such a joy to watch him skate. He is the pure joy of skating, and that is what Skate Canada and Skate Newfoundland and Labrador is about.
