JOHN'S, N.L. — Newfoundland and Labrador is reporting a record year for immigration after exhausting the number of yearly permanent residency spaces issued by the federal government.
This year, the federal government issued 1,593 spaces for the province to nominate newcomers for permanent residency. After predicting a record year for immigration, the province asked for a substantial increase in spaces for 2022, but the request was denied. "We are turning the tide of forecasted population decline, but we need the federal government to act on our call, so our population growth will not be obstructed, newcomers will not face longer processing times, and there will not be fewer immigration spaces of which to avail,” said Byrne.
While provincial nominations have effectively closed for 2022, the province's immigration office is still accepting applications, which will be forwarded to the federal government for processing after Jan. 1, 2023.
