Newfoundland and Labrador has added coverage for two IV-infused medications used for the treatment of multiple sclerosis under the provincial prescription drug coverage program.ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Newfoundland and Labrador is adding two IV medications used to treat multiple sclerosis to theThe province has added prescription medications Tysabri and Lemtrada to the drug program. Typically, both drugs are dispensed by a pharmacy and used at an outside acute care facility.
Historically, IV medications were excluded from the prescription drug program because they could only be administered in an acute care facility with the medication provided at no cost. However, the province said in recent years, an increasing number of IV medications have been delivered through private clinics in the community.
Health officials said adding the medications to the program will ensure consistency in coverage, regardless of where they are administered.
