More than one-third of small businesses have hired people who never show up or stop coming into work shortly after starting the job, a new CFIB survey finds.

Amanda Mayhew has been “ghosted” by new hires and prospective employees more times than she can count.

“We even have group interviews set up for 20 people and only three show up,” she said. “People are staying on average for a month to three months, or keep switching from full-time to part-time.” Being ghosted, compounded with the labour shortage, is crippling small businesses that already operate within tight budgets and are carrying an average of $110,000 in debt, said Dan Kelly, president and CEO of CFIB.

“Businesses are having to pivot. I know some that were open seven days a week and now it’s five. Or are only open late for one night as opposed to three,” she said. “They’re operating on a skeleton staff.” There’s also been a seismic shift in how prospective workers communicate with employers. Galipo believes the pandemic is partly to blame.
